Inhalt

The course provides an introduction into research designs and methods commonly used in small-n research. Topics include causality and explanation, causal inference, concept specification, case selection, data collection, measurement, process tracing and content analysis. Students learn to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative approaches and to critically design and improve their own research.

Lernziele

Theoretical understanding of strengths and weaknesses of small-N research
Overview of state-of-the-art literature on the topic
Critiqual evaluation of research designs
Awareness of trade-offs inherent in the research process
Learn to develop good (small-n) research designs not least in view of prepa-ration of MA thesis)
Capacity to design and to write case studies
