The Mediterranean is a contact zone of Africa, Asia and Europe that was already connected before modern globalisation. Since antiquity, the borders of polities and populations have repeatedly shifted in all directions in this region. At the same time, the Mediterranean is the cradle of three monotheistic world religions, which have coexisted, competed and communicated in a confined space here since the Arab-Muslim expansion. After 1492, the centre of the world economy shifted to the Atlantic. Nevertheless, the Mediterranean remained a place of change and innovation. Today's world would be unthinkable without inventions such as tourism, fascism or the Mediterranean diet. The lecture series focusses on key problems of Mediterranean history over a period of 3,000 years: power, economy and society, culture and religion, mobility and connectivity. Experts from individual eras will speak in each session: Ulrich Gotter (Antiquity), Daniel G. König (Middle Ages), Achim Landwehr and Jovo Miladinović (Early Modern History), Manuel Borutta (Modern History), Sven Reichardt (Contemporary History), Pavel Kolář (Eastern European History).
