Kinder statt Inder - The Politics of Demographic Fears in the Global North and South

Datum: 04.05.2017

Vortrag: Prof. Shalini Randeria

The lecture will address the politics of demographic fears all over the world, which are entangled with the increasing strength of ethno-national identities. While international migration and “the fear of small numbers”, as Appadurai aptly calls it, fuels pro-natalist policies in Eastern and Western Europe, the global backlash against women’s rights and LGBT rights in Eastern Europe can also be understood in this context. The quest for economic development based on neo-Malthusian premises, however, continues to animate state-driven population control programs in Africa or Asia. The contemporary dynamics of state control over reproduction will be considered against the background of its post-1945 global history.
